The organizers of the Yuriten Exhibition announced the cancellation of the 10th anniversary event, which was scheduled to be held in Tokyo, due to criticism regarding the use of AI-generated images. The planned "Yuriten 10th Anniversary Restart Campaign in Ikebukuro" was set to take place as a free event at the Hareza Ikebukuro complex on October 17 and 18.
Criticism of AI-Generated Images
Shortly after the event was announced on social media, it was revealed that AI-generated images were being used, drawing strong criticism from artists and fans. Several manga artists who have previously participated in the Yuriten Exhibition expressed their disappointment. Notably, Nakatani Nio and Yukiko, the author of Futari Beya, have shown cautious attitudes towards the use of AI.
Lilium's Response and Policy
Lilium explained that the event's operations and promotions had been outsourced to an external company and acknowledged there were issues with the checking system prior to the initial announcement. The organization has reaffirmed a policy prohibiting the use of generative AI and stated it will enforce this policy with external contractors moving forward.
Background of the Event Cancellation
The Yuriten Exhibition was first held at Marui in Ikebukuro in 2016 and has since been showcased at various locations. However, this is not the first time such issues have arisen. In 2018, a similar event was canceled shortly before its scheduled start, reportedly due to difficulties in securing participation from creators.
Responding to the current situation, Lilium, the organizer, plans to review its management of external contractors and improve the operation of future Yuriten Exhibitions.
