The massive Halloween event that colors the streets of Ikebukuro, the Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival 2026, was held vibrantly across all of Ikebukuro from October 30 to November 1, 2026. Now in its 13th year, the event attracted a record 172,000 participants, with the number of foreign visitors increasing by 1.7 times compared to the previous year, drawing considerable attention.
Excitement at Ikeharo Night
The first night, named Ikeharo Night, was held in Sunshine City, where participants enjoyed new avenues of interaction, such as photography in cosplay against the backdrop of the night view. The event also featured stage performances, with the usual events like arm wrestling and karaoke competitions in cosplay drawing enthusiastic crowds.
Highlights of the Cosplay Parade
The Ikebukuro Cosplay Parade, a main activity held over two days including Halloween, also drew significant attention. As the parade's highlight, approximately 400 cosplayers marched from Sunshine 60 Street to Hareza Ikebukuro, accompanied by a performance from the brass band of Tokyo Metropolitan Toyoshima High School. Cheers echoed from the roadside spectators, capturing the hearts of many.
A Festival Rich in International Hospitality
This year's festival served as a platform for deepening cross-cultural exchanges beyond language and cultural barriers. With the increase in overseas participants, cosplayers from around the world participated in workshops to experience traditional Japanese culture, such as origami and calligraphy in cosplay. These programs were newly introduced to help overseas participants gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
Additionally, the event "Cosplay Gathering," particularly focused on overseas cosplayers, introduced "Welcome to IKEHALO," which provided opportunities for cultural exchanges, thereby strengthening bonds among participants. There was also a noticeable trend of overseas cosplayers utilizing new filming technologies like VR and AR, advancing the fusion with Japanese cosplay culture.
